Hawaiʻi once harbored more than 750 land snail species, but more than half have disappeared due to habitat loss and predation by invasive species. Most land snail species exhibit high endemism, meaning they are found in only one specific area (i.e. only in one mountain range or only on one island). Conservationists are working diligently to protect Hawaiian land snails.
