The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the rarest seals in the world and is Hawaiʻi's only seal species. Known as 'īlio holo i ka uaua in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, these seals can be seen resting on the shore for long periods of time. It is important that we respect the seals and give them their space, as these rest periods are crucial between foraging and while caring for pups.
