Koa (Acacia koa) is an endemic tree to Hawaiʻi. Koa is important to Hawaiian forests because it helps other plants grow by producing nitrogen fertilizer with its roots (thanks to beneficial microbes!)

Koa wood was used historically for making waʻa (canoe) and papa heʻe nalu (surfboards). The wood is one of the most expensive woods in the world, cherished for its strength and beauty. Modern koa harvests use already-fallen trees to prevent harm to native forests.
